Bheka Enhliziyweni Yakho — Look Inside Your Own Heart
We are often quick to notice the smallest fault in another person, yet slow to recognise the faults within ourselves.
Bheka Enhliziyweni Yakho — “Look Inside Your Own Heart” — is a reflective kalaam weaving together isiZulu and Urdu around a simple but powerful lesson: before we speak about another person's shortcomings, we should first turn the mirror toward ourselves.
The story begins beneath an ancient tree, where an elder shows a group of children a clean white stone bearing just one small black mark. Every child notices the mark. None mentions all the white surrounding it.
And so begins the reminder:
Bheka enhliziyweni yakho.
Look inside your own heart.
Yeka ukugxeka, qala ngawe.
Stop fault-finding; start with yourself.
Thula, ulalele, ungahluleli muntu.
Be silent, listen; judge no one.
Bheka esibukweni.
Look in the mirror.
As the kalaam unfolds, we journey through moments of gossip, judgement, exposing the faults of others and overlooking our own. The mirror becomes more than an object — it becomes a reminder to examine the nafs, preserve the dignity of others, and begin reform with ourselves.
Na dhūndh ‘aib auron ke, zara apne bhī dil mein dekh,
Do not search for the faults of others; look first within your own heart.
Uṭhā ā’ina, apne rū-ba-rū rakh de zara, Qaseem,
Raise the mirror and place it before yourself, O Qaseem.
May this kalaam remind us to speak less about the shortcomings of others, conceal rather than expose, forgive rather than condemn, and keep returning the mirror to ourselves.
Bheka enhliziyweni yakho. ❤️
